2015 Apr 30

The print edition of Lewis University's student newspaper, The Flyer, has earned a first place award for General Excellence and an award for Outstanding Sports Coverage in the 2015 American Scholastic Press Association's (ASPA) newspaper competition. Roslyn Summerville of Wauconda is studying Mass Communications at Lewis University.

The College Point, N.Y. organization applauded The Flyer editors for their commitment to the publication stating in their critique that the print edition "shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of editors, reporters, writers, photographers, layout designers and adviser."

ASPA judges reviewed three editions of The Flyer from the 2014-15 academic year and allocated points in content coverage, page design, general plan, art, editing and creativity. The process was thorough with judges assessing 38 subcategories. Editors received a perfect score in content coverage and strong scores in the other five categories. In total, The Flyer accrued 945 out of a possible 1,000 points.

In addition, The Flyer was the only print student newspaper published by a four year university to earn the Outstanding Sports Coverage award. ASPA judges agreed that The Flyer's sports editors and writers produce an original and well-written section.

"I am especially proud of our editors," said Lisa O'Toole, faculty adviser of the print edition and assistant professor of communications. "They work as a unified team to ensure that the Lewis University community can enjoy an entertaining and informative newspaper that highlights a variety of student programs, services and athletics. It's exciting to earn this award at the conclusion of another successful academic year."
