Victoria Colclasure Presents Research Projects at Illinois State Academy of Science

Victoria Colclasure of Bolingbrook, Ill. and another Lewis University biology student recently presented their undergraduate research projects at the 105th annual meeting of the Illinois State Academy of Science in Jacksonville.

Victoria Colclasure presented "I Brought Home a Coliform?" Her research was about coliform bacteria and how bacterium interacts with common fabrics. She commented, "I have never presented at a conference before, nor have I participated in research. Both are very new experiences for me that will give me new skills in terms of communication and lab work."

Deirdre McCormick presented "The Role of Biofilms in Dreissenid Recruitment in Milwaukee Harbor – Ten Years Later."

Dr. Jerry Kavouras, director of Environmental Science and associate professor of biology, was their faculty mentor. He is also the 2013/2014 Lewis University Caterpillar Scholar Award recipient for his research on "Dreissenid Recruitment in Milwaukee Harbor – Ten Years Later."

They were among the undergraduate and graduate students throughout Illinois presenting at the conference featuring discussions, displays and a keynote presentation from astronomer Pamela Gay.
