2011 Nov 30

Veronica Mathy of Wilmington, Ill. along with 17 other WLRA DJ's help raise more than $6,100 for the Family Assitance Fund at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill.

The "To Kill a DJ" programming ran from Nov. 4-Nov. 14, and involved 6-hour non-stop broadcasts, with select university students going even longer. Natalie Paul and T'rell Campbell broadcasted for 42 hours. Brittany Miller and Anthony Trotter broadcasted for 48 hours.

"WLRA's - To Kill a DJ" is a service learning project for Lewis University Communications Department students enrolled in courses that have WLRA Radio as a lab. WLRA raises the funds from continuous on-air marathons with pledged support.

The Lewis University Family Assistance Fund is used to support families of hospitalized children in their greatest time of need. In the past, the funds have been used to pay for cab rides to and from the hospital for children to have chemotherapy or outpatient services, medicine, clothes when being discharged, hotel rooms for families, bus passes and airline flights to the hospital. Advocate Hope Children's Hospital is located on the campus of Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill.

In the spring, WLRA will present another marathon broadcast and the College of Nursing will present "Change for Children" - all in support of The Lewis University Family Assistance Fund at Hope Children's Hospital.
