Martin Romo of Romeoville receives Father Aquinas Award

2015 Jun 3

A student of many skills--fluent in Spanish, Russian, computer languages, computer security and the legal system--earned the 2015 Spring Father Aquinas Colgan Award. Martin Romo of Romeoville was honored during the May Lewis University Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony.

Students are nominated for the Father Aquinas Colgan Award by University faculty and staff. To be eligible for nomination, a student must be an undergraduate who has qualified for graduation, who is a four-year student of Lewis University with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who has demonstrated exemplary personal, intellectual and social development in the spirit of Lewis University's Mission.

Romo, who earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal/Social Justice, was an active student at Lewis University. The Fellowship of Justice member was an active member of the nationally-recognized Lewis University Mock Trial Team. During his two-year stint with Mock Trial, the team earned consecutive bids to the national tournament.

"Thanks to Mock Trial, my speaking skills started to flourish. The shy, quiet person I was before was shifting into a more talkative one," described Romo.

He also was active in other areas of the university, such as being a member of the computer science student organization called Prometheon Club.

"Martin was a great student to have in class. As a minor in Cyber Security Science, Martin came to our Computer Science courses with very little background in computing. But he worked hard, always paid attention, came to our faculty for help when he needed it, and showed a genuine curiosity and desire to learn that we, as faculty, really enjoyed. Cyber security requires people of keen intellect and high integrity, and Martin brings both," commented Dr. Ray Klump, chair and professor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

The Foreign Language Department was well-acquainted with Romo as well. He wrote numerous articles for the Foreign Language Department newsletter and served in other ways.
