Kelsey Schmitt of Elmhurst is inducted into Lewis University chemistry honor society

Seven Lewis University students were recently inducted into Iota Sigma Pi, a national honor society for women in chemistry. Iota Sigma Pi serves to promote the advancement of women in chemistry by granting recognition to women who have demonstrated superior scholastic achievement and high professional competence by election into Iota Sigma Pi.

Kelsey Schmitt of Elmhurst, Ill. was one of the seven students.

New initiates include Samantha Brain, Lisa Janes, Amy Mlynarski, Meghan Nichol, Kelsey Schmitt, Julianne Truffa and Danielle Volk.

Students with at least four semesters of chemistry are eligible for induction. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better is required and for those with only four semesters of chemistry, a 3.5 GPA in chemistry is required. If more than four semesters have been taken, the in-field GPA requirement is 3.0.

Founded in 1939, Aurum Iodide is the Chicago Metropolitan Chapter of Iota Sigma Pi with members located within a 50-mile radius of the city. Members include chemistry students and academic and professional women. Aurum Iodide meetings are held monthly during the academic year and include dinner and a speaker. The chapter undertakes several outreach programs: participation in ACS Chemistry Week, judging at regional science fairs and symposia for undergraduates.

Iota Sigma Pi currently has more than 10,000 members in 40 local chapters at various colleges, universities and metropolitan areas. The organization works to promote interest in chemistry among women students; to foster mutual advancement in academic, business and social life; and to stimulate personal accomplishments in chemical fields.
