The Nov. 4, 2014 election served as a learning experience for the Lewis University students enrolled in the Campaigns and Elections course. On Election Day, Kathleen Skinner and five other students conducted exit poll surveys at a polling place at Romeoville High School.

"Our hope was that this information can help our students and faculty better understand the attitudes and choices of local voters," Dr. Steven Nawara, assistant professor of political science, said.

The students designed the questionnaire, completed the required ethics training and administered the 35-question survey. Questions varied. For example, one question was "Generally speaking, do you consider yourself to be a Republican, Democrat, or what?"

The students plan to use the survey results in a term paper, which will analyze how local voters voted and what issues were important to them.

Lewis University students who participated in surveying include Luis Angeles, Samantha Glackin, Ian Miller, Eric Schmitz, Kathleen Skinner and Amanda Patenoude.

Lewis University's Political Science Department offers a broad curriculum that provides students with a deep understanding of government and politics at all levels. The department's environment encourages thoughtful intellectual exchange, in which students develop critical thinking skills, develop different points of view and learn the importance of politics, nationally and globally.
