Jordan Kaiser Coordinates "Night at the Lab" for 3rd-5th Graders

2012 Nov 5

More than 70 students and their families attended "Night at the Lab" for 3rd-5th graders Oct. 27 at Lewis University. They participated in hands-on experiments and viewed demonstrations presented by Jordan Kaiser of Hanover Park and other Lewis students who participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.

Attendees rotated to five different stations focusing on biology, chemistry, computer science, psychology and physics. One of the rotations included the computer science lab in which attendees learned how to write computer programs that solve problems, simulate systems, tell stories and entertain. Attendees also wrote computer programs to control bird-like robots called Finches. They also learned a computer programming language named Scratch.

Lewis University SURE program students coordinated the event, including Victoria Colclasure of Bolingbrook, Thomas Campbell of St. Louis, Mo., Russell Johnson of Lemont, Elie Shmayel of Darien, Stephanie Tribo of Manhattan and Brian Wilhelm of New Lenox. Other students involved in the event include Robert Granko of Manhattan, Emily Grimm of Orland Park, Lauren Jacobson of Plainfield, Jordan Kaiser from Hanover Park, Michael Korby of Elgin, and graduate student Brandon Greene of Chicago. The SURE program is a 10-week interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering and math program that provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in faculty-led research.
