Jeromy Rech of Saint John is inducted into Rotaract Club at Lewis University

2015 May 26

Rotaract Club, the collegiate level of the international service organization Rotary, recently held its installation ceremony to celebrate the establishment of the chapter at Lewis University. Rotaract embodies a "service above self" attitude by participating in multiple service opportunities throughout the year. Saint John resident Jeromy Rech is a member of the club.

"I feel that it is so important that service be selfless and performed only with the intent of helping others in contrast to obtaining a quota of hours or to receive additional tassels at graduation," said Penelope Strid, junior biology and chemistry major and president of Rotaract. "I believe giving your time unselfishly is one of the greatest gifts one can give, as time is something you can't get back, while you can always make more money."

Current members of the club include Penelope Strid, president; Sarah Parker, vice president; Kaitlyn Curtis, treasurer; Melissa Schraub, secretary; Samuel Baker, Rebecca Klaff, Kaylen Miller, Mary Kate Nelson, Mercedes Porter, Lisa Schopper, Kathleen Skopec, Kasey Stelmaszek, Jeromy Rech, Elizabeth Richardson, Kirsten Rothenbucher and Denisse Trinidad.

Fred Dewald, adjunct professor of finance, serves as the faculty advisor for Rotaract Club.

Rotary was established in Evanston, Ill. in 1905 by Paul P. Harris. It was one of the first service organizations in the world "where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary's name came from the group's early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member."

Rotary has additional branches, including Rotaract for young adults ages 18 to 30, in addition to Interact for high school students, and Early Act for elementary students ages 5 to 13.
