Anthony Lyen Earns Third Place in National Competition for "The Flyer" Facebook Page

2012 Apr 5

Anthony Lyen of Chicago and the members of The Flyer, Lewis University’s online student newspaper, won third place in the “Best Facebook Page” category for the College Media Association’s 2012 Apple Award. The CMA described The Flyer Facebook Page, “It is evident ... the admins are taking the steps to try new things on the page to make it work, and that's what social media as a business is all about.”

The national competition was open to student media from colleges and universities of all sizes. The Daily Collegian of Penn State University won first place honors and The Pendulum of Elon University earned second place.

Professor Benjamin Eveloff, assistant professor of Communications, is advisor of the online edition of The Flyer. “I'm excited to see that the students have been recognized for their hard work this year by CMA,” Eveloff said. “Victoria Strid has done a great job of managing and building our social media presence the last two semesters and Sal Ursino, while he was a student last fall, made a lot of graphics for The Flyer Facebook Page.”

Current members of the Online Flyer staff include: Carolyn Jones, online editor-in-chief; Dave Hansen, assistant online editor; and Victoria Strid, online community manager.

The David L. Adams Apple Awards are given as a “Best of Show” at the annual CMA Spring Conference in New York City. The awards are named in honor or David L. Adams, a longtime College Media Advisers stalwart at Indiana University, who died in 2007. CMA communicates and works with professional media organizations and education associations to educate and inform advisers about their roles in serving students and about the teaching, advising and production of collegiate media.
