Amber Milliron helps Lewis University Mock Trial team win first place at tournament

The Lewis University Mock Trial team tied for first place at the Seventh Annual Fantastic Flyers Tournament, held Nov. 16-17 on the Lewis campus.

The team was commended by Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University, for achieving a three-way tie with Loyola and Illinois State University by posting six wins by members of Team No. 1, along with one loss and one tie in the hard-fought tournament.

“High praise to each member of the Mock Trial team and their coaches for a very fine performance and impressive achievement, with five of our Flyers earning special awards,” said Brother James.

Yorkville resident Amber Milliron is a sophomore at Lewis University and is studying Business Administration.

Receiving awards for excellence were Megan Arehart who won two awards, earning one as Outstanding Attorney and another for Outstanding Witness, and David DeSchepper who also was recognized with an Outstanding Attorney Award. Also achieving Outstanding Witness awards were Anthony Scorzo and Michael Noe.

Members of Mock Trial Team No. 1 who helped Lewis tie for first place were Arehart, DeSchepper, Noe, Scorzo, Andrew Lichtenstein, Kathleen Skinner and Maggie Huggins. Members of Team No. 2, who won two rounds and finished 11th, included: Ray Banda, Larry Beyer, Darrell Boisdorf, Audrey Donovan, Cedelle Kupfer-Escobedo, Amber Milliron, Ashley Patek, Martin Romo, Alberto Salas and Erica Swanberg.

“Much encouragement to each of the members of the Mock Trial team as they work with our fine coaches in preparing for two meets on December 8-9: one close to home in Champaign and another at Yale University,” commented Brother James.

Dr. James Houlihan, professor of justice, law and public safety studies and advisor of Pre-Law program, is moderator of the Mock Trial team. Coaches include Bill Rock, an attorney; Cary Hansing and Paul Namie. All three of the coaches are Lewis alumni and former award-winning members of the Flyers Mock Trial team.
